Its important to note that technology plays only a small part of Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP). Having a well documented plan in place AND ensuring that users are aware of the plan AND ensuring users know how to execute the plan in the event of a disaster is of high importance. In IT we like to throw technology at problems in order to make them go away, but when the lights go dim, and the power goes out, RAVE still relies on a powered infrastructure in order to function...

Good points there... if the lights do go out, the cell phone towers won't last very long. We learned that last October 15 after the earthquake. Users need to understand their place in the plan, and the plan should be viable even when electricity and bandwidth aren't available.

More on supported RAVE telephone carriers...

Currently RAVE supports "Tier 1" carriers which include : Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, Boost, Alltel, Virgin Mobile US, US Cellular, Cellular One (Dobson) and Cincinnati Bell. Non Tier 1 carriers or pre-paid cellular services such as MOBI are currently not supported. However, students that do not have a tier 1 carrier will still receive an alert via email. So make sure you sign up!

Interesting news, that is. Students seem more likely to use prepaid or non-tier 1 mobile than the average population, so one would assume that Rave would support these carriers. Wonder why they're not?
